"Evoking a Myth" is a sound installation that addresses our way of gravitating between nature and contemporary technology, inspired by the literary concept of Magic Realism as a narrative resource.
The installation consists of an immersive structure with eight loudspeakers placed in a circle emulating a Maloka. The piece is combined with a ceramic pendulum that drops water over a metallic basin to which is attached a microphone that amplifies the sound of falling water and leads to an introspective state that symbolises a sacred place. Alongside this, the light in the space is reduced, seeking the idea of fire as an element of gathering.
Along with this, a sound composition performed live, composed of decoded soundscapes, auditory residues and low frequencies that travel between the natural and the artificial. The composition makes a curve trying to evidence the way we create new truths and how we float, gravitate and emerge from them.
Alongside this, an improvised dance performance inspired by the idea of immediate experience, in which the dancer reacts directly to internal and external stimuli giving visual form to the circular soundscape. The dancer explores frequencies that emulate the expansion and contraction of the myth.
A myth is a literary construct that has the capacity to guide the ways of human beings. It is neither true nor false. It exists only as a story through which we make sense of our world. It is a story that has the power to shape the way we understand the limits of our reality. By that same power, myths can expand or contract, they show how gravitational we are, how much of this planet we are, and therefore how strong our relationship to it is or should be.
In today's world, fast-paced, media-driven, anxious, vulnerable to radicalism, always chaotic, alienated from our body and our own nature, many new myths emerge. I wonder which ones expand or contract us in our contemporaneity.
In short, the sound installation invites us to reflect on our limitations and how far or close we are from contracting or expanding from new perspectives.
